OUR TRAINERS

Sifu James Sinclair

James Sinclair began his martial arts journey in 1972, studying karate under Sensei Alan White. In October 1985, he founded the United Kingdom Wing Chun Kung Fu Association. With over 45 years of experience, Master Sinclair now oversees branches including Leicester Wing Chun, bringing authentic, decades-honed teaching to the Midlands.

Inzar Haq

Inzar Haq leads the beginner classes at Leicester Wing Chun, guiding new students through the fundamentals with patience and clear instruction.

“Sifu James has very high standards and teaches the Wing Chun system as do many other instructors but with this class you get over 40 years of his knowledge and hands on experience. He knows what works and what does not in many situations having analysed different styles and techniques.”

Paul Symonds
“As a beginner I felt nothing but support from both Sifu and other students. As well as learning techniques, my fitness has increased over the years making me a better all round martial artist. Looking forward to many more years training under my Sifu and this school!”
Marty

“The teaching is progressive and inspirational and consists of a perfect blend of building knowledge and practical elements to support students in their development. The students of the class are friendly and like-minded and support each other in their training.”

FAQ – OUR CLASSES

Typically, a class begins with a warm-up, then progresses to drills for punching and striking efficiency on pads and then on to work with a partner. The majority of any class is ‘hands-on’ with a partner. Many different facets will be trained, from self-defence to visualisation and meditation.

Surviving a violent confrontation naturally requires a strong, physical response. But in our school, we draw a strict line between real-world violence and martial arts training.

Beginners always start gently. As students advance, the physical intensity increases to simulate real encounters. While it may look aggressive to a bystander, it is actually the exact opposite of a street fight: it is highly skilled, emotionally controlled, and driven by focus rather than temper.

We teach our students how to handle the chaotic, uncontrolled rage of an attacker while remaining civilized and disciplined themselves. Ultimately, martial arts are about self-preservation, never intimidation. Following Sun Tzu’s advice to ‘give your opponent an honourable retreat,’ we train to defeat the threat and de-escalate the situation, ensuring you can defend yourself without becoming the aggressor.

No. You can get severely injured in a real fight. However, you should expect some bruising and minor abrasions in class from time to time. The aim is to improve, not be injured more each time you attend class than you ever would in most confrontational situations. We train our army to fight in life or death situations but we don’t aim to kill any of our troops in training!

We know that getting fitter is a major goal for most people starting martial arts. That’s why we start all beginners slowly, focusing on gentle exercises and learning the basics before moving on to anything overly strenuous.

Often, we see a wonderful snowball effect: as students get more involved in Wing Chun, their overall health improves, and they find themselves wanting to exercise outside of class, too! Being fit helps you stay focused and absorb new skills more easily. We absolutely want you to reach your goals, but we will never push you to do something you aren’t ready for. Remember to bring a drink, take breaks when you need them, and pace yourself. Overtraining early on is counterproductive, so always listen to your body.

The most important requirement is that you enjoy the training and are willing to dedicate yourself to a task. You do not need to be big and strong to learn Wing Chun Kung Fu.
